Africa boasts some of the world’s largest reserves of gold, industrial diamonds, manganese and platinum group metals. In addition, huge swaths of the continent remain entirely unprobed, with the potential to more than double mineral reserves in the coming decades. Unsurprisingly, the lions’ share of foreign investment into the region has been channelled into the mining sector.
Yet this investment remains a small percentage of global investment into the industry; foreign investors are wary of unstable fiscal regimes, unreliable legal systems, immature foreign exchange markets, uncertain repatriation guarantees and a woefully lacking infrastructure.

Improvements are underway. In the past decade, mining investment in the continent has accelerated markedly, albeit with a heavy bias toward a select few countries in the south and east of the region. The outlook remains bright on the whole, though success will be unevenly distributed. The biggest challenge faced by the mining sector is undoubtedly country-specific political risk. Global Insiders diamonds & precious metals reports tackle the most pertinent issues on a country-by-country basis, providing insight and thought-leadership to help companies navigate the ever-changing business terrain.
